Upon graduation from Harvard Law School in 1895, her husband joined the law office of Louis Brandeis who later became the first Jewish Justice of the Supreme Court. Mary Crane’s marriage was not without some intrigue:


Mary Crane would find herself in the middle of a high-society scandal that was featured in a front-page double-type-headlined article (Boston Post, October 28, 1910). At the time she had been the close friend of Mary Bigelow Young, the wife of Edward McClennen, a prominent lawyer with the well-know law firm of Brandeis, Dunbar & Nutter. When Mrs. McClennen was away, Mary Crane often stayed at the McClennen’s house and cared for the children. The McClennens, who had recently completed a custom home at 35 Lakeview Ave., Cambridge, were close friends with Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer, he, a law associate of Mr. McClennen who lived around the corner at 77 Larch Rd. with his then pregnant wife and their two boys. Mary Young abrupty ran off with Robert Sawyer and Edward McClennen filed suit for divorce soon thereafter. Mary Crane cared for the children after the elopement and, ten months later, after the divorce was finalized, she and Mr. McClennen married.

1873 - 1959; parents: John Prentiss Hopkinson and Mary Elizabeth Bessie Watson ; married, 1893, George Pierce Baker (Harvard College, 1887); lived in Cambridge, MA

She graduated from Radcliffe in 1893; was an acting dean and trustee there; was a lecturer, historian and genealogist who authored several books. She also lived in New Haven where her husband, a renowned drama teacher and critic who had been a member of the famous 47 Club in Cambridge, was a professor and creator of the Drama Department at Yale.

1877 – 1968; never married; parents: Henry Payson Briggs, Katherine Elizabeth Briggs; lived at 10 Allerton St.

She lived most of her life in her childhood home at 10 Allerton St. (torn down after WWII to make more room for 14 Allerton St.). In 1896, she authored Brookline in the Civil War, published by the Historical Society. She worked the Girl Scouts national organization.

1874 - ; never married; parents: William Sewall Cutler, Helen Augusta Clark; lived on 20 Chestnut St., Walnut St.

A direct descendant of Nathan Hale, she lived her entire life in Brookline (in the 1800s at 20 Chestnut St. with her mother’s parents, the Clarks; in 1910, 310 Walnut St.; in 1920, 272 Walnut St.; in 1930, 75 Sargent Rd.). In 1931, she was president of the Brookline Garden Club.

1882 - 1952; married, 1910, Helen Macy; parents: Joseph Thomas Hall, Myra Garrison;

The Hall family lived at 99 High St. circa 1883-1889. The parents, Joseph Thomas Hall and Myra Isabelle Garrison had previously been living in Baltimore. The fact that the last known records for Joseph Hall are from 1880 and that son, Irving Kent was born in September 1881 would indicate that the elder Hall died in early 1881. The widowed Myra Garrison Hall then left Baltimore and moved to Jay Candler's 99 High St. home. She subsequently moved to Cambridge starting in 1892. In 1900, Irving was living with her there as he attended Harvard. He married Helen Macy in 1910 and was employed as a tea merchant in a New York firm run by his wife's father.

1879 – 1946; married, 1909, Evelyn Orville Ames; parents: Joseph Thomas Hall, Myra Garrison;

The Hall family lived at 99 High St. circa 1883-1889. The parents, Joseph Thomas Hall and Myra Isabelle Garrison had previously been living in Baltimore. The fact that the last known records for Joseph Hall are from 1880 and that Frederick’s younger brother, Irving Kent was born in September 1881 would indicate that the elder Hall died in early 1881. Fred Garrison Hall married Evelyn Orville Ames in 1909 after graduating from Harvard. He was trained as an architect but became an etcher whose works are in museums around the world. His first wife, Evelyn, died in December of 1940. He continued to live in their home at 260 Beacon St., Boston, then married Ariel Perry and moved to 360 Beacon St., Boston.

Born in 1883, her parents were Thomas Hart Clay Jr. and Annie Gratz. The family lived at 94 Upland Rd. (Walley Ave. at the time), which is still standing, from approximately 1887 to 1892. She married Green Gibson.

Younger sister of Miriam who is also featured in this album. A descendant of generations of prominent Kentucky families and a direct descendant of Henry Clay, former Speaker of the House and Senator from Kentucky. Her family spent a few years living in Brookline on Walley Ave. (now called Upland Ave.) when her father was the Boston editor of The Youth's Companion, published by Edward Stanwood, father of this album's creator.

Their father was the Boston editor of The Youth's Companion, published by Edward Stanwood, father of the photo album's creator.
