Piano Practice
Indications are that Adeline played the piano.
The High School At Pierce Hall
The building, which later came to be called Pierce Hall, still stands today as part of the First Parish Church. It has a important place in the history of Brookline and has seen multiple functions over the years:
1825 It started its life with its dedication on January 1, 1825 - the Town Hall on the second floor and the District School below.
1843 The District School gave way to the establishment in the building of the town's first high school.
1845 The building became solely occupied by the high school when a new town hall was built in the Village. "The boys occupied the lower story, and a most dismal, damp and dark room it was. The building had no cellar and was placed low on the ground. The windows were small and the whole atmosphere of the place was depressing. The upper floor was occupied by the girls and was a light, cheerful room, and it was a great boon to the boys when the whole school gathered there, or when they went there to recite. "
1856 The town built a new high school in the Village and the future Pierce Hall lay empty as preparations were made for the opening of a primary school
1857 On the 25th of May, 1857, a new school called the South Primary was opened in the building.
1868 The Boylston Primary schoolhouse was built to replace the South Primary School.
1869 The building was sold to Edward Atkinson and Nathaniel G. Chapin, it was then used as a private school until circa 1888.
1890 Purchased by the First Parish Church and named Pierce Hall in memory of Dr. Pierce, who was the minister of the Parish for fifty years.
