The Wide, Wide World was first published in 1850 under the pseudonym Elizabeth Wetherell. The real author was Susan Warner. Wikipedia writes:
It is often acclaimed as America's first bestseller.... This book was originally written with the goal of teaching people a Christian lesson, so many of the themes are Christian in nature and aim to show people how a true Christian ought to live his or her life. One of themes present in The Wide, Wide World is that everything in life, even the bad things, is caused by God and leads to something good, especially in the spiritual sense.
