Boles had worked for the Water Department but had been dismissed for drunkenness three days earlier. His mug shot was taken by a professional photographer (Ed. in 1904, the Brookline police had no facilites for making mug shots). He was arraigned the next day in district court. He was found guilty in Superior Court and sentenced to life in prison.
