In late November, 1851, the Faxons and Adeline's grandmother moved to Walpole, New Hampshire. Where they initially lived is not yet clear. On January 26, 1853 Adeline died of consumption, as her sister, Lydia, had in the summer of 1850. She is buried in the Walpole Village Cemetery. This diary is labeled as volume two with a reference to a volume three at the bottom of the final page. One wonders how, one hundred severnty years later, it alone appeared in an antique fair in New Hampshire. Are the other volumes out there somewhere? As to other family members:

  • 1855: Adeline's older sister, Mary, and her family moved from Brookline to Clifton, Illinois where they were early settlers.
  • 1856: Adeline's younger sister, Elizabeth, took part in the plays put on by Louisa May Alcott and her three sisters in Walpole. Lizzy was described by Judge Bellows there as "the village beauty and belle"
  • 1857: Sister Elizabeth married William Benoni Tobey and moved out of Walpole to the Chicago area.
  • 1857: The Faxons buy the house that still stands at 48 Westminster St. in Walpole. The house remained in the family until 1949.
  • 1861: Adeline's father dies in Walpole at the age of 67
  • 1861: Adeline's younger brother, John Faxon, musters in to the infantry (4th Vermont Infantry and 10th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry) and musters out in 1864
  • 1869: John Faxon marries and raises a family in Rockford, Illinois; he was later a businessman in New Orleans where he died at the age of 61
  • 1881: Elizabeth Faxon Tobey's 21-year old daughter, Mary Adeline Tobey, moves to Walpole and lives with Adeline's mother. She had been living with great-uncle Amos Lockwood in Providence.
  • 1883: Adeline's mother dies in Walpole at the age of 82
  • 1889: Elizabeth Faxon Tobey moves back to Walpole after the death of her husband and lives with her daughter, Mary Adeline Tobey. Mary eventually marries, in 1930 at the age of 42, her husband dies 4 years later, and she lives with her mother until the latter's death in 1920.
  • 2009: The descendants of Charles Oliver Howe and Mary Faxon donate family records to The Newberry Library. The collection contains correspondance with Adeline before and after the dates of this diary volume.
