This is the gravestone of Anna Mather, the second wife of Increase Mather, and step-mother to Cotton Mather. She died in Brookline of small-pox in 1737, and was buried in the old Walnut Street Ground. Presumably she was not inoculated by Dr. Boylston. There was a good deal of controversy about that procedure, as you can imagine; not everybody trusted it initially.
