This is the Devotion house which mainly dates from the 1740's. The house is owned by the Town and administered by the Historical Society.
Edward Devotion, Jr., described as "a public spirited citizen," was for a long time the tithingman for First Church. Quoting Harriet Woods:
"The principal duty of this officer - the tithingman -- was to keep good order during divine service among the children, who sat in rows by themselves instead of with their parents. A long rod was usually carried by the tithingman, with which to touch any delinquent who might become drowsy or mischievous."
