Daniels, waiting in his car, was shot in the shoulder. He managed to flag down a motorist, a Mr. Shields who drove them to the Fire Station C. They were then escorted to Peter Bent Brigham Hospital by a firefighter. O'Brien died the next day after giving a detailed description of his attackers.

Police officers, alerted by the blinking lights on Gamewell Police Boxes, rushed to the scene to collect evidence. A resident found a jacket under his exterior steps. The name "Gordon Wilson" was on a handkerchief stuffed into the pocket.
